eBay and the Mom-and-Pop.

By: Carl Broady

A few years ago it looked as if eBay was going to be the savior of the home business in U.S.A.
Home based businesses in the USA are an endangered species having to compete with well funded well organized franchises and major corporations. Ebay seemed to break this mold. Unfortunately it couldn't and didn't last. The big boys moved in to eBay and the home businesses found themselves competing on eBay with very large corporations with lots of money who are able to go directly to the source and negotiate much lower prices from suppliers.
The main problem with eBay is purchasing goods to sell. The problem arises in that if you can locate goods so can most other eBay sellers. And unfortunately they often do.
I, and I think other dealers have had some limited success in sourcing a product for resale on Ebay itself. What I would do is make a list of items that were good sellers. Then I would then bid on these items. Nine times out of ten I lost the auction but sometimes I would win one. Instead of re-auctioning any item I would often offer the item for sale at a fixed price in an eBay store or on Amazon.com.

I learned quickly not to become emotionally attached to the goods that I was bidding on and that not winning auctions was just a part of the game. I would expect to lose a lot of auctions a day, and maybe not even win one. When you have been outbid on an auction on Ebay they will automatically send you an e-mail which says something like: don't let it get away. I always ignored this email because I had already bid as much as I was going to.
Another frequent issue with goods that I bought on Ebay is they were seldom as good as described. On very few occasions was a product I bought on eBay better than described. Unfortunately I think that so many people have had this same experience.
I think for eBay to sell more that they have to address the quality problem. I think that there has to be a rule that the customer is always right, up to a point, there are nuisance customers who want return every purchase or will try to negotiate a lower price after the auction or sale. When these buyers have been identified they should have their accounts closed.

When sellers know that the buyers have the right to return eBay purchases for a full refund or exchange including shipping, they will be far less likely to ship broken, Shoddy, counterfeit or substandard merchandise.
I think that eBay will thrive and survive and will be the main auction website for many years to come and will remain a great company but I think that they are going to have to change some of their practices as they have in recent times with their feedback system.
