Can we perceive this issue from a different point of view? Dogs are the best pets and we love dogs; we don't want to behave like a usual dog owner. We must not treat our friend like a mere plaything. As humans have their own minds, so do dogs. We are solely responsible for separating them from the mothers at a very early age of only six to eight weeks. We brought home a friend and now we should treat him like a friend. Dogs are descendants of wolves but have become very attached to humans. We should be able to give that same level of love and attachment to them in return. Although dogs are fiercely loyal, but they choose to be loyal to a single person. Nonetheless, he displays different levels of attachment for the other members of the family. This responsibility is on us to take good care of this friend as a member of the family. This eradicates a common cause of what we call barking. Some of us do get scared when dogs bark. This however, is their regular practice through which they can communicate. Dogs often have more subtle methods of communication. They try to express themselves through their faint sounds and certain fleeting expressions. We just need to be responsive and attentive. We must be able to catch their faint signals in order to respond to their needs. Complexity and intelligence are the two traits of every dog. They are likely to have certain needs that include food, attention and proper exercise. Instead of wishing away their emotions, it is imperative to understand the same. If only we realize that this friend of ours is feeling lonely or bored or is just plain unwell, he doesn't need to bark at all. You certainly want to raise your puppy as a family member. So, it would be wise to overlook the advice given in the dog training books and sites. Stop issuing single-word commands and expecting your dog to behave like a robot. You need to talk to the dog frequently and for long hours if possible. Don't ever underestimate your own dog. Experience tells us that dogs understand a lot of words that we most commonly use. It is just that this poor chap cannot speak, or else we would know how much he understands. We must try to recall the principles of body language and also face reading and try applying these to dogs. Your friend is giving you innumerable signals in real time. Carefully look at the face, his eyes especially, and then glance at the body. Your instincts will succeed in taking care of everything, once your soul reaches out to your pet. You will discover all that he needs and desires as well as his love and attachment towards you. In brief, try to treat the puppy as a child and do what a good parent would do. Don't ever think of giving a silencer to your friend. It is probably you who need a loudspeaker to hear this unspoken language of the world of canines.
