Why dogs dote on this lady artist

By: Alis Senrs

Troubles bark at this talented Pasadena painter every time she has to render a portrait of her most unpredictable clients. These well bred subjects will never pose as patiently and politely as mother would for whistler. These eager little clients are always raging to be out and about, signaling when the sitting will be over, giving the lady portraitist a very short while to pore through and assess his exquisite features then off he goes after a short, loud bark or maybe a scratch at a flea he thinks he has.

The home that she and her husband live in has a sunny second floor and this where she captures her dog subjects with the use of an instant camera and does her preliminary sketches. She encounters dog subjects posing better than other subjects such as cats. Better are the posers who are of well trained show breeds who are apparently very vain on how they appear.

Thoroughbreds are mostly in her clientele roster. With the recognizable skeletal structure and coat shades of thoroughbreds, they are much easier to paint that the rest. The body structure of the purebred hound is easily seen and its short hair is convenient, making this type of dog this lady painter's favorite. Such subjects also have excellent expressions making her enjoy them more.

During the week, this lady portraitist is also a local observatory's technical illustrator and she is also known to be adept with landscapes with water color as medium. Her best works are housed in a popular gallery. After studying at an art institute based in New York, she became an expert in magazine illustration. A teacher suggested to her that she paint pooches.

Using first hand information, she studied and sketched the breeds she finds at the New York dog shows and she enjoyed it for she was an animal lover. Making a portrait of a dowager from New York's dog was her first commission. The painting of the dog which was felice signed took its place beside the lady dowager's original Rembrandt and Frans Hals paintings after it was framed elegantly. She successfully launched a sketchbook featuring the American kennel club's listed breeds along with its studies and descriptions.

About twenty years ago, they made the big move to California, in a 1913 Pasadena craftsman's home which had on its second floor, a studio that any artist will fall in love with. Such is the place headed by masters and their adorable pooches to have these cuddly pets painted and be immortalized for a long time. When it comes to her clients, she uses pastels most of the time while charcoal and oil are her second options. She is overwhelmed with so many subjects coming in during the Christmas period.

Just like painters of human beings, she readily admits to flattering her non human subjects just a little bit. Hounds with purebred bloodlines going as early as the time of ancient Egypt and Persia known today as salukis are being raised happily by her and her retired electrical engineering husband.
