Where Bedbugs Are Found, and What They Look Like

By: Dovid Davis

Experts believe that bed bugs inherited their name from their close association with beds and bedding Bed bugs often seek refuge in bedding during the day and feed on the bed's occupants at night. These insects are called by several different names:wall louse, house bug, mahogany flat, red coat, and crimson ramblers, to list just a few.,

While bed bugs feed primarily on humans, they also quite capable of feeding on other mammals, poultry, and birds. Knowledge about their host range is confounded by the fact that the insect family Cimicidae, of which the common bed bug is a member, has several closely related species with similar habits and appearance. For example, among bedbugs found in the Southwest USA are the western bat bug (Cimex pilosellus Horvath) and the swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarius Horvath). While these outdoor pests prefer other hosts, they can, when stressed, feed on humans.

Unlike many other house pests, bed bugs have never been proven to be carries of disease, at least not in the US. Nevertheless, they cause an annoying epidemic presence at times and are a definite intrusion into the privacy andcleanliness of the home environment. Bedbugs are spread via clothing, traveler baggage, guests, used beds, bedding material household furniture and laundries Threfore, it behooves the cautious homeowner to follow certain protective standards to keep bedbugs out of the house. He should carefully protect his luggage on a trip by using luggage racks and avoid placing baggage on the ground. Upon returning home, a traveller should immediately wash all his travel clothes in hot water. Homeowers should also be careful to inspect all second hand furniture for bed bugs before bringing any item into the house. |He should meticulously inspect any and all second furniture or other items that are brought into his home.}

Mature bed bugs are a brown- to mahogany-colored, wingless insect. Their size depends on how recently they have eaten a blood meal. An unfed bed bug is between 1/4 and 3/8 inches long. The upper surface of their body have a papery, crinkly, flimsy appearance. When engorged with blood, its body becomes elongated and swollen, and its color changes from brown to dull red. The color, size, and shape change from an unfed to a full bug is vrey noticeable.
