When is HD not HD? Answer when you do not know the differentiation between HD ready and HD

By: robert jeffries

With everyone rushing out to acquire HD televisions you would believe the uptake of HD TV package subscriptions to be on the rise but you would be wrong. The trouble is that there are thousands and thousands of citizens out there who suspect that they are watching their favourite programmes in high definition because their televisions are HD ready but it hasn't yet dawned on them that they need to first subscribe to a television package that broadcasts in HD, secondly connect their television using the correct cables and thirdly make sure their HD ready television is set correctly to view high definition from their chosen input.

You just know that 80% of pensioners are sitting in cosy arm chairs thinking they are watching David Dickinson in HD on their flat screen televisions but missing out on the real orangeness of his leathery face by not watching him in actual HD

Now I understand that the older generation may struggle to come to terms with technology and for them they are entitled to call upon a member of the younger generation or a trained TV Guy for guidance on set up but the 30 something generation should at least have a hold on the technology they have grown up immersed in.

Take my brother in law for instance. It has taken him 2 years to finally purchase a flat screen television that is HD ready after he made his mind up that he will funds. Now that he has his television that he is very proud of and he told me that he could not guess the quality of high definition television and he should have done it years ago blah blah blah.. However when I went to have a look at his new setup he was watch common television programs and had his sky box connected via a scart cable so even if he was watching a HD broadcast there would be no difference in picture quality. He also purchased a Blu-ray player and connected that with a scart cable instead of a HDMI lead. I have tried to put him truthful but he is adamant that the picture he is watching is 1080p so I have no pursued it any further.

When my parent asked me about Blu-ray I decided the best way to explain was to expose her the difference so I put on Batman returns on my 50" plasma. The comment from her was that she could see no difference and can I show her the News in Blu-ray so she could compare the picture.

Technology is truly wasted on some individuals and unfortunately two of them are family members!
