Online poker has become an incredibly popular pastime worldwide. There are hundreds of online poker sites out there, some of them that allow you to play for free, some you can play for money. But one of the things that make online poker so difficult today is the invention of incredibly smart, cut-throat Poker Bots. A Poker Bot is a computer program designed to play poker online and win. And win they do. There is concern in the online community that poker bots will soon be required to win. So what if a Poker Bot could play in the WSOP? Imagine if a Poker Bot could play in the World Series of Poker? What kind of impact would that have on the game? A Poker Bot, when properly programmed, can make up to £3 an hour on one table. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but leave it running and over time that can really add up to some serious winnings. Now imagine having a poker bot playing on four or five tables at the same time. At a minimum of £3 an hour, that can be earnings of £12 to £15 an hour. Nothing to scoff at to be sure. What makes a poker bot so dangerous an opponent is the fact that even a slow computer can make complex calculations in far less time than a human can. An average Poker Bot can simulate over five million situations at the flop in less than a second. This means it knows exactly how strong your hand is and all the possible outcomes. This is something that a human player - not even the best poker player in the world - could ever possibly match. Poker Bots also have a lifelong memory. They can remember every opponents previous actions flawlessly. They can tell you what the player next to you did on every hand, and remember what hand that player had. This means that even though the poker bot might not play against this opponent again until after 2 years from their last meeting, the next time they play the bot will already know that player’s style. There are many strategies available to human players. Books on winning poker strategies are abundant. However, most players will remember less than 20% of the strategies they learn and will often over-use the few strategies they remember. A poker bot can have every single winning strategy programmed in and use them when appropriate. A Poker Bot is also more patient than a human player. A poker bot will only play a hand that should be played, that has a significant chance of winning. A human might feel the need to gamble and try to win with a terrible hand. A Poker Bot though will have no issues folding 80% of its hands if that is what is necessary to win. And all the while the bot is “not playing,” it is collecting data on the other player’s styles and strategies so it can be even more effective. A lot of human players go off of “tells” when playing poker. The way someone might play with their chips when they are getting anxious to raise can mean they have a good hand. These are things that a good poker player will notice and use to their advantage. But in online poker, nobody has any tells. If a Poker Bot could play in the WSOP, it would have a clear advantage because it would have no tells. It would be unfeeling, emotionless. It wouldn’t feel the same pressures that a human player who is playing in the world’s largest poker tournament would feel. It would just be another game to the poker bot. How would the other players react to a Poker Bot playing in the WSOP? Would they feel rattled? Would it affect their strategies, even alter their game play? Maybe they wouldn’t be able to even focus on each other because they would be so concerned about the seeming invincible Poker Bot playing. If a Poker Bot could play in the WSOP, about the only chance the human players would have against it would be to find a way to collude with each other, and focus their collective efforts on knocking the Poker Bot out of the game as quickly as they could. If they didn’t the Poker Bot would likely win the tournament, and be an even stronger opponent the following year.
