website vs. Television, which channel is best. I have heard so several arguments over this topic in the previous month, that I decided to write about it. The one channel (TV) has been around for ages, with many businesses using this profitably. In the last 10 years or so the internet has entered our lives and developed a new marketing and pr channel. Which is better? Which one yields better results? This editorial will discuss the pros and con’s of each channel, highlighting the effectiveness of each one. COST WEBSITE Online marketing and pr through your site is a much more cost effective way to publicize. Typically there is a once off cost for your website and thereafter there are no real costs, besides the negligible hosting cost. Besides the initial cost, there is an ongoing internet marketing cost. This is the cost associated with PPC, SEO, Affiliates, or in certain cases the email marketing and pr cost. These costs vary, and will be discussed further on in the articles. TV The expenses associated with Television advertising is much higher. There is a production cost and then there are expenses that go towards the TV stations. These are typically very high, depending on the time and station that you are marketing on. From a cost perspective, using your internet site is a much more cost effective way to market! MEASUREMENT WEBSITE / ONLINE MARKETING Online marketing and pr gives its advertiser the ability to measure every action that takes place online. Your ROI is highly measurable and track able. You can see how much budget has been spent and see the responses associated with this? This channel allows you to clearly understand you marketing and pr initiatives and the response to your efforts TV Once you have spent your money on tv, it is much more difficult to understand the effect that your initiative has had. There is often no way to measure how lots of sales were made or what the direct response was to your advert. From a measurement point of view online marketing is the more effective channel. SEGMENTATION / ONLINE MARKETING From an online perspective, you have the possibility to determine who sees your advert. You can determine via IP addresses where users are loging in from. You can also segment this geographically though Google tools. The websites that you advertise on also give you an indication of readership. This further helps you segment your target market. TV Television also has the ability to segment the viewership. The programme that you watch and the time viewed helps Television marketers determine their target market. Once again, online marketing has the edge. ONLINE MARKETING In the case of South Africa, there is almost 7 million online users, with a high number of competing sites for these users. The user base is limited to the availability of connectivity and the expenses associated with this. TV Television marketing has a much higher audience and there is also a smaller number of competing adverts due to the reason that one can only view one advert at a time. several more South Africans have access to a Television and thus is a very attractive form of advertising to reach mass markets. In this case Television is more effective then online marketing , pr and advertising. Although this is not a comprehensive comparison, it highlights the impact that online marketing is having on our economy and business. Watch the space, the internet will soon take over.
