Web Design for Businesses

By: Neil Fletcher

Websites have become an invaluable marketing tool for business of all shapes and sizes. Almost every website on the internet is unique and it can be difficult to define exactly what type of website would be best for your business and whether it might be better to go to a company to make your site, or have a go at making the website yourself.
There are two main roles that a website can play; the first, is to backup your existing business, so that customers who already know who you are can go to your website and verify your credentials, typically by having a well designed professional website.
The second, is for the website to attract new business via Search Engines, either with an ecommerce section or an online application form.
The golden rule of advertising, is to never spend more money than you can afford, as you can't guarantee you'll make any money from having a website. Occasionally companies choose to either not have a website, or have it made for them at no cost. However, there are pitfalls in having this.
When an agency is involved in making you a website, they should employ people who are trained and experienced in Search Engine Optimisation, Web Design and Web Development. These are three very separate skills in themselves. Web Designers are great at designing websites which look amazing, but are not very god at making application forms of websites. Developers are great at making functional sites, with contact and ecommerce but don't care much for SEO or the way the site looks to customers. SEO experts are great at SEO, but neither design or development, but needs to be involved right from the start to ensure your website is SEO friendly.
Creating websites involves multiple skills, which is why asking one person to make a website, usually ends with at best, an unpolished solution. This can be detrimental to customers who visit your site looking to validate your business credentials.
So make sure whoever makes your website is competent in the three skills; SEO, Design and Development. This will enable your business gets the best possible start from having a website.
