Theming Drupal for Beginners

By: Jason Mcdonald

Theming a site in drupal is basically taking a unappealing website and giving it a certain look and feel.
Drupal uses what they call themes to rein in the way your site is shown to the end user. It does this by way of css and template files which are fundamentally standard html files with php placeholders. Most people get overwhelmed by the whole theming thing but, it truly isn't anything more that just understanding simple html and a small amount of css. You will have a theme folder where all your changes should be made. Never alter any central files. This allows drupal to do its work and pass it to your theme folder where it will magically adjust the output to what you have included in your theme.
For rookie themers its easiest to take a peek at the customary drupal themes and work them backwards. Open up zen and check out the file structure, most have essentially the same files. Once you recognize this then open up the files independently. Study them, you will notice its just html and some php snippets.
With a little work you will start being capable of doing thes themes on your own so leap right in, as long as you aren't affecting the central files you won't permanently impair anything.
