The New PS Move

The Wii revolutionized home gaming systems by creating games that are more interactive. Rather than just sitting on the couch and moving your fingers you could play games and move around too. It requires greater control in order to win these games; just like it does in real sports. Nintendo Wii made extensive profits off their system and individuals it continues to sell well.

Perhaps in an attempt to keep up, Sony has now unveiled the PlayStation Move. It was revealed during the Game Developers Conference in California. The remote is just like a microphone but it has an LED embedded inside. Sony launched the motion-sensitive gadget in an effort to supercharge their gross sales and hopefully take at least some of the gains Wii is currently enjoying. The device was revealed by Sony, and they are planning to sell it before Microsoft enters the ring with their Project Natal controller system that some think will quickly come to dominate the industry.

The Move will be on store shelves this fall in a starter kit that may be obtained for less than one hundred dollars. This edition offers the Move, a Playstation eye camera and a single game. Clearly, it's not too costly and is expected to sell well unless people choose to wait for the Natal to be on the market instead.

Meanwhile, the president of Sony's worldwide studios Shuehei Yoshida explained that Move will "demonstrate that the motion controller for PS3 will be the solution for both intermittent and hard-core gamers alike" and the different types of games Sony can create are "extremely diverse." Some of the games that will be available include swords, bows and arrows, guns, punching and even more.

It looks like it will be cool but the simple fact is it looks a lot like the Wii remote except for the laughable ping pong ball on top that changes color to either blue, pink, yellow, or green. It looks rather lame, but my chief worry is if it's not very sturdy. It appears that a small child could destroy it easily.

For myself I'm a trifle disappointed that Move isn't more interesting and original. It looks like they only copies Wii. It is a general expectation for products to improve over time, but this doesn't seem to be that much more impressive. Especially since Microsoft is working on their Natal. There's a cool looking product! Everyone just hopes it will work as well as expected?

Microsoft is famed for being behind when it comes to creation but they excel when taking someone else's concept and improving it. So Natal looks phenomenal; the idea that gamers do not have to have paddles and it can just be aware of your actions is really cool. But how perfectly the designers will actually be able to make that device is a question.

For example how extensive will the range be and will the system be capable of distinguishing the actions as well as the separate players well? It just seems like a very complex set-up and it is not clear whether it will work as well as the commercials portray it. But even if it doesn't work very well you can always hold out for the new and improved second version that will have all the kinks worked out. That will probably be what a lot of us do.
