The Hills Season 6 Review - Part 1

By: Selena James Smith

I have just finished watching the first half of season 6 of The Hills, and I feel I have to write about this now. I cannot wait until the end of the season, so my review for season 6 will have to be spread out over two parts. Also, for reasons you will see as you watch it, the first half will be distinctly different from the second. Or will it? Who knows! I for one hope it isn't.

Before I get into the meat of the season, I will cover some of the subplots. The strange thing about this season is, what has to be considered as a subplot - given everything else that is going on at the time - is the life of the main character, Kristin Cavallari. Yes, the things that happen around Kristin's group of friends (can you call them friends?) are in many ways secondary to what is going on elsewhere in this show. Kristin's main trials are being rumored to be a drug addict after partying way too hard in Miami, and of course her inextinguishable feelings for Brody Jenner, who at first is more eager to have Audrina, but gets rejected flat out in favor of musician Ryan. This plot is, while not exactly original, quite engaging to say the least, especially when Audrina's old flame Justin aka Justin Bobby comes back on the scene. Lo, Lauren Conrad's old highschool friend, is unlike L.C. still willing to be filmed and so features quite frequently in season 6, working in her cosmetics firm and setting up blind dates in her typical mischievous fashion. Kristin calls Lo weak, but I think that is just malicious, something that is typical of Kristin. In all honesty, Lo is just a nice girl, plain and simple. She's not really the fake, scheming, malignant type of character you often see in Hollywood; she is just straightforward and pleasant, a nice change in this season.

Now, onto the main talking point of season 6: Spencer's insanity. Yes, whereas before I had thought him to be just a controlling, horrible man, now he has crossed the line into sociopath crazytown, as more than one cast member put it. He wears a host of bizarre crystals to keep out the bad 'energy' from other people, and amongst the very few kind gestures he makes this season is a giant crystal to Kristin at her barbeque. She is literally speechless when she receives it, and not in the good way. Heidi has had 10 surgeries; she can barely talk and can't even chew a burger ("Do you want me to put it in a blender?" asks Heidi's mother). She looks like a blonde version of Michael Jackson. Her breasts are huge and look ghastly not to mention terribly unhealthy, yet she wants them even bigger! These days I rarely laugh out loud or gasp in shock at television, I can only do that for selected Japanese films, but Spencer's outbursts are like unrestrained verbal cancer. They are that malicious and hateful that I can barely believe it. I always knew he was a horrible person but as the very grounded Lo rightly asks, at what point did he take a left turn into crazytown? What made him like this? His sister, Stephanie, while not the best person in the world, is for better or worse his sister. He hasn't spoken for months to her, his own sister, and when Stephanie tries to approach him, he starts yelling at her uncontrollably. He grows even louder and even more malicious when Stephanie understandably begins to cry. Yet he doesn't seem capable of understanding why she is crying and why she is so upset. If I hadn't seen my brother in months because he had cut me out of his life, then I would definitely be emotional about it. Spencer seems hell-bent on keeping Heidi at all costs; he manipulates her so that he can keep her in their little marriage bubble, cutting out everyone else outside it, even the closest family and friends. I had heard rumors that they have gotten divorced but as I watch this season, I honestly don't want to know. I am too intrigued as to the outcome of this, though I must say, I don't think it will be good. It's not just Spencer being manipulative; the girls make an excellent point and demonstrate their emotional intelligence when they state that Heidi plays the victim in order to get away with what she is doing, cutting off all her friends and family, because she feels lost without Spencer. She is so insecure that she simply must have countless plastic surgeries, and Spencer, or she will die. Whatever Spencer does - and he says some horrid things about Heidi's own mother, and to Heidi's sister - Heidi turns a blind eye. Spencer could singlehandedly commit a genocide and Heidi would still love him. She would still find a way to justify his actions as necessary and good.

Season 6 of The Hills is so far, quite unexpectedly, one of the most engaging of all. And that's not because of the sassy attitude of Kristin Cavallari, it is the unfortunate mental demise of two of the show's most well known characters. I can't wait to watch part 2.
