Some Tanzania holidays are celebrated in many other countries, such as New Years Day, Islamic New Year, Propheys Birthday, Good Friday through Easter Monday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Other holidays celebrated in Tanzania are more unique to Tanzania, such as Independence and Republic Day and Zanzibar Revolution Day. Depending on what you want to experience while visiting you might want to visit during some Tanzania holidays, although sometimes a lot of places are closed on the holidays, so depending on your preferences you might want to avoid those days. Zanzibar Revolution Day is celebrated on January 12th throughout Tanzania, as it has been designated a public holiday in Tanzania. This holiday celebrates the local African revolutionaries overthrowing the Sultan of Zanzibar and the predominately Arab government ending the two centuries of Arab rule on the island. If you want to experience the celebration of this Tanzania holiday it is best to visit Zanzibar to see the parade and festivities there. Union Day is another one of the major Tanzania holidays. This day is celebrated annually on April 26. Union Day commemorates when Zanzibar and Tanganyika united to become the United Republic of Tanzania on April 26, 1964. This holiday is celebrated throughout the country of Tanzania, so you can experience the holiday by visiting anywhere in Tanzania on April 26. Of course, the bigger parades and celebrations tend to be in the larger cities, but the rural celebrations can also be a fun unique experience. This is probably the most major of the Tanzania holidays. Independence and Republic Day is another one of the biggest Tanzania holidays. This holiday is celebrated on December 9. This day commemorates peacefully becoming independent from Britain back in the 1960s. The Independence Day celebrations often include fireworks. Some of the traditional celebrations include government officials and celebrities appearing at National Stadium, a torch being taken to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, pardoning of prisoners (usually ones that are over 70 or terminally ill), and animals being butchered for local delicacies to be made and served. The biggest festivities are usually in the former capital, Dar es Salaam, so you might want to plan to be there for the Independence and Republic Day holiday. However, you might also want a more peaceful day where the festivities are smaller or avoid it altogether and visit at other times of the year.
