One of the biggest problems when it comes to safety glasses and safety goggles at work is that employees so rarely where them. Perhaps that's a slight exaggeration - in many cases they begin wearing them, but often they seem to come off during the course of the day. Recent statistics have revealed that in the overwhelming majority of cases where an injury to the eye has been sustained at work, safety glasses or safety goggles were available, but for one reason or another the worker failed to use them. It would be easy in such cases to dismiss the injury and state that it was entirely the responsibility of the worker. After all, if the business has gone to the trouble of sourcing and providing safety glasses and safety goggles for its workers, it can't really be expected to do much more. If the workers fail to use the safety equipment provided, how can that be the fault of the business? This has been the attitude of many businesses, and yet in many instances it has gone to court, and the law has deemed the business to be at least partially responsible and in some cases, entirely responsible for the injury sustained. Not only does this result in a very expensive case and brings with it much negative publicity, but it brings into question many of the other safety related assumptions that may be being made, and which could result in expensive legal proceedings if an accident should occur. The real problem is not so much whether the business provides safety equipment such as safety glasses and safety goggles, but whether that equipment is suitable, appropriate, fit for purpose, suitable for the job, suitable for the conditions in which the workers will be operating, and whether appropriate procedures are in place for monitoring these points, and whether those procedures are actually being carried out. Manufacturers of safety glasses and safety goggles may well be able to advertise their products as being able to protect the eye from a range of specific dangers, but they clearly can't foresee every possible combination, and every possible way in which the glasses may be used. There will necessarily be situations in which workers find that the goggles are not suitable. It should also be kept in mind that not every single worker has the same shaped head, the same sized head, the same hair, the same level of eyesight and even the same sized or spaced eyeballs. All of these apparently innocent and relatively minor matters can easily result in issues which can, over time, cause workers to remove their safety glasses and accept the risks rather than feel the discomfort and inconvenience for any longer. Recent studies have revealed the top reasons why workers remove their safety glasses or safety goggles, and being aware of these may help businesses to revaluate the eye protection they are offering their workers, in order to identify whether these problems can be effectively addressed. One of the main problems reported was fogging. Fogging is the build up of condensation either on the inside of the safety goggles or on the outside. This fogging can be gradual, building up throughout the day, or in many cases the fogging may build very rapidly, within a couple of seconds. This is often caused by workers moving from contrasting areas where temperature or humidity levels may vary widely. Many businesses have hotter, colder or more humid areas, and when working or moving outdoors the temperature may be significantly different. For people who wear normal spectacles this has often been a problem when walking into shops or even the home from outside, where glasses instantly steam up. Those who wear contact lenses quote this as being the prime reason for switching, but clearly contact lenses do not offer any protection within the workplace. However, there are modern safety glasses and safety goggles which have been specially treated to resist fogging, thereby removing the problem and the inconvenience. The second major factor in the removal of safety goggles was peripheral loss of vision, caused by bulky or inconveniently placed frames, and in many cases the bulkiness or the rigid frames were also cause for discomfort. However, this really doesn't have to be the case, and there is no reason why safety has to equal discomfort. Modern safety glasses and safety goggles offer much improved levels of comfort, as well as safety, and with anti fogging treatments as standard, there are fewer reasons for non compliance than even just a few years ago.
