Prince William County was first created as an act of the General Assembly of the colony of Virginia in 1731, in large part from the western part of Stafford County and a segment of King George County. The area that the Act created encompassed in the beginning all of what was later to become Arlington County, the City of Alexandria, the City of Fairfax, Fairfax County, City of Falls Church, Fauquier County, Loudon County, City of Manassas and Manassas Park.

Prince William County's name was derived from Prince William Duke of Cumberland, King George II's third son.
For years the county was very rural oriented with half the majority of the populace centered in Manassas, which was home to a major railroad junction. The other half of the majority people was based in Occoquan and Woodbridge along side the Potomac River.
