Mentors in online business and network marketing have various levels of expertise, mentoring styles, different personalities and management approach. In an online business world that changes and expands more than most - through new modern advances, cutting-edge marketing techniques and tools, and a considerable turnover in both active business owners and business opportunities - it is no surprise that mentors are ‘born’ each day and take on new people to help them in building a web-based business, and also in growing by way of personal development and entrepreneurship. The responsibility of a mentor in network marketing is actually multifaceted. Personal development has in fact been recognised as an essential factor for becoming an online entrepreneur and building a rewarding business. In addition, mentors are introduced to new income opportunities and tools every day, and before sharing their recommendations must make a decision about whether or not they are just another ineffective fad, or a revolutionary tactic which will secure more profits and stronger business practices. Now, realistically, can we expect each mentor to learn all about the latest and most effective business strategies in the industry, while being an expert in personal development? Those of you who read my content frequently will know that I’m not one to go for the realistic side, but really, in an industry that evolves so fast and thrives on new entrepreneurs becoming mentors and leaders instantly, we cannot demand this degree of expertise and experience. The standard notion of mentoring is based on a one-way relationship, going from the expert to the apprentice. What I have found in network marketing however, is rather different. First of all, mentors abound, in all areas of online business growth, online marketing, personal development, and leadership. Second, their leadership and business approaches differ greatly. Third, collaboration in key in our industry, by way of servant leadership and also intrinsically in how we value leveraging and duplicating our business outcomes. Finally, as online entrepreneurs, we attach importance to networking and masterminding with like-minded people, and have the freedom to pick who we work with. Together, these factors fully substanciate the thought of reciprocal mentoring. So what do I call reciprocal mentoring? Mentoring is about sharing inspiration and expertise, as well as providing authentic support for personal development in one’s personal passions and strengths. By means of masterminding and networking with various individuals who have similar values and goals, I've found myself in both the mentor and mentoree role. I have provided training, advice, inspiration, guidance and support to individuals who, in return, have given me the same in other areas. In that sense, mutual mentoring is creating a relationship wherein two people can mentor each other, through their unique expertise, inspiration and strengths The idea of mutual mentoring has great implications for new online entrepreneurs and network marketers. It means that they can utilise their strengths straight away in mentoring others. It means that they have the power to impact on their very own mentors. It means that they can engage in relationships knowing that they can participate and give value, whether or not it is through partnerships, informal masterminding or team training. It also implies that they can be empowered leaders, while at the same time being mentored themselves by the like-minded people who have the right expertise and values. And for the truly experienced mentors and business veterans, it means that they are able to get some value back when they mentor others, particularly as they develop relationships with people who have a comparable level of expertise, but in other areas for their personal development or online business. With reciprocal mentoring, the exchange between two people needn't be one of knowledge one way, and money the other way. The exchange can be of true value, knowledge and inspiration, reciprocally between two individuals who share the same values and goals, but have distinct strengths and expertise to contribute. What is your experience with reciprocal mentoring? Do you have trust in its value for network maketers?
