Everybody has at least once confronted with classical topographic maps - whether at geography lessons at school, or while travelling. These maps are known for giving a very exact presentation of the area. They reflect all the objects with scale and using different colors. Although standard topographic maps represent in the most part a set of symbols that are not so easy for a customary user to comprehend. Sometimes you need a professional to explain all the features on the map. In any case, it will take some time and efforts to learn the topography language. Fortunately, there are lots of other methods to depict a landscape. They are large in number, but may be divided into three main groups:
- Illustrated maps
- Panoramic maps
- Pictorial maps
You may surmise what these kinds of maps constitute by their names, but we will give some explanation to avert their confusing.
Thus, an illustrated map represents a topographic map with a number of additional illustrations. It means that certain objects on the map (for example, churches, parks or some other features) will be indicated by little pictures. This kind of maps is the closest one to the standard variant.
A panoramic map may be referred to as a portrait of the landscape. Now and then it's also called a perspective since it portrays a certain area as it is viewed from a certain point in space. Such maps are very accurate about dimensions, but on the other hand, different individual objects are scarcely recognizable or even not recognizable at all. Such type of maps is widespread in certain fields of activity like ski resorts depiction.
As far as pictorial map is concerned this type is concentrated on the details, but not at following accurate sizes. Individual objects are pictured with their distinguishing features and, accordingly, are easily distinguishable. On the other hand, distances do not always comply with the reality, now and then the landscape can be slightly reduced or distorted since the stress is placed on the representation of objects. The named type of maps enjoys high popularity thanks to their nice looks, informative filling and easiness in use. In spite of scale distortions they are great for navigating while planning a tour or seeking a certain place.
