The Word file format was developed by Microsoft Ltd. It was originally named Multi-Tool Word. The first addition was released in 1983. Since then, there have been developed several other versions, including of the latest addition that appeared in 2008. The next version of Word is said to come to the market in 2010. It will include many new features typical of other applications in the Office 2010. The 2010 version will have new WordArt styles and effects supplanting the old ones. Although Word is a constituent of the Microsoft Office system, it sells as a standalone application and included in Microsoft Works Suite. Beginning with the 2003 addition, the branding was changed to emphasise Word's identity as a constituent within the Office Suite. The company renamed Microsoft Word into Microsoft Office Word. Microsoft Word allows users to type, format and edit text to be printed or viewed electronically. Word is a low-cost word processing programme. Word offers unlimited features and tools, and a lot of users are familiar and extensively use Microsoft toolbars. Word has tools to format fonts, add page numbers and clipart, and create headers and tables. Microsoft Word's document formats are denoted either by a. doc or. docx file extension. The newer ".docx" extension stands for the Office Open XML international standard for Office documents and is used by Word 2007 for Windows, Word 2008 for the Macintosh.
