In the 1820’s an article of clothing known as the English topcoat became an influential change in the attire of stylish men and to which mens leather coats owe their fame. From the trench style to leather jackets, these outfits continue their recognition with men all over the world. Prices have changed from five to twenty dollars in the eighteen hundreds to more than a thousand dollars at present for a designer custom garment. These days men have a choice of either a single breasted or double breasted. Coats for men come in varied leathers such as lambskin, buckskin, and kidskin to name a few. Not only may he decide from a variety of designs and finishes, but he can also decide to go vintage, conventional, or modern. This form of garment has continually been and is still considered the attire of chic and is still an eminent part of the attire of the man that desires to impress. For a brief while between the 1800’s and the early 1900’s there was a down turn in the popularity of the mens leather coats. In spite of this with the advent of the automobile it had its resurgence. The overcoat, boots, goggles, scarf and gloves became the typical attire for the man that owned an automobile. This outfit was the forerunner of today’s motorcycle jacket. Hollywood did not waste time and jumped on the band wagon having their respectable guys and wicked guys alike all outfitted in leather. Soon additional new designs appeared on the scene, with styles such as pea coats, motorcycle jackets, flight jackets and more. History and Hollywood testify that mens leather coats were worn by heroes on the battle fields and on the screen.
