LegoMindstorms Review (241)

By: Sammie Fields

The LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 (8547) is a robotics kit that allows you to realize, manufacture and program your own robot. However that's not everything!

As you grow more experienced, you'll learn to go beyond the user's manual, and as is the nature of Lego, you can disregard all the rules and go on to construct whatsoever you desire. With time your robots will grow more sophisticated both in the way they look, and in the way they act - the things they can do. Some of the possibilties will simply stun and stupefy you.

You won't exactly cause a robotics revolution with your Legos Mindstorm NXT robots taking over the universe, but with all the cool things you can do with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT, you'll be occupied and amused for a lifetime. It's kind of like that old classic Lego set that you might still have stored away. It's always good fun when you take it back out and see what new shapes you can build. The Mindstorms set will have a similar effect, but better - you'll never put it away in the cellar or the basement, it will always be kept where you can see it - ready to be taken off and played with again and again..

In all honesty it's quite pricy for a Christmas gift, however for a gift you can go on using evermore, the Mindstorms NXT 2.0 8547 is certainly worth it.

Who Is The LEGO Mindstorms NXT 8547 Set Suitable For?

Mindstorms NXT is suitable for anyone over 10 years of age. The instructions for making and programming your 1st few robots are really quite simple to follow.

Sure, the word ‘programming’ sounds like it could be confusing, but it can really just involve a few clicks here and there with your p.c. mouse and a few taps on your keyboard.

Kids can find numerous ways of enjoying their Mindstorms kit, while on the other hand someone older or more experienced can utilize more complicated programming to make more complicated robots.

What Do You Get Inside The Package?

The LEGO Mindstorms NXT box contains six hundred and nineteen parts. This consists of a collection of beams, sensors, rods, connectors and wheels.

The Primary Building Unit

The Mindstorms design is in the form of beams as opposed to the usual brick as used in LEGO, giving it a kind of Meccano quality. Not like Meccano however, you can easily put the pieces together without the need for any screw drivers or spanners - just use your hands. All you need is the contents of your box, and of course... a PC.

Thanks to having so many pieces that all look similar, you might spend the first few days taking a little longer constructing those robots, as you'll take some time finding the right pieces you need. But when you've played around with the set for a while you'll start making those robots with amazing efficiency.

Motors x3

These servo motors will be responsible for making your robot move.

The Sensory Units

The sensors enable the robot to gather info regarding its environment so that it can then process it and act accordingly. The sensors listed below are available with the Mindstorms NXT 8547…

1. A light sensor, with which your robot can 'see' different levels of light and even 'see' colors so that it can respond when you show it a blue ball for example, and not respond to a yellow one or respond differently.

2. A sensor for kinesthetic input, that enables your robot to 'feel.' No I'm not talking about emotions, but rather about touch. Your robot can be activated to carry out a programmed action when you or something else touches it..

3. A sensory unit for audio input, enabling your robot to listen to and react to various sounds.

4. An ultrasonic sensor, which applies sound-beams to determine how much distance your robot has from a solid object - so it does not need to bump into the wall before it turns away.

The Intelligent Brick Of NXT

This is (along with the sensory units) the main unit that differentiates Mindstorms from the LEGO Technique range. It processes the information from the 4 sensors and according to your programming, directs the servo motors to respond by fulfilling a movement, whether it be by stepping forwards, turning a wheel, shooting balls, flipping through pages in a book… and so on and so forth.

User's Guidebook

Despite Mindstorms seeming so complicated when you haven't tried it, the User Booklet is surprisingly simple, with one-step-at-a-time instructions on how to make a shooter bot, robotic alligator, color sorting machine and a walking robot as featured on the box.

Beyond that you’re left to use your own vision to create whatever you desire. If you think you've exhausted your creativity, you can give your brain a rest and purchase guides written by experts on how to construct some phenomenal robots.

The frustration in building your personal designs is you’ll probably run out of parts to use. Fortunately the Lego Technique range uses the same series of beams, and you can always get a Lego Technique set if you need the parts. Lego was designed to go together.
