Learn how to get to the top of Google?

What I wish to accomplish here is to remove out all of the nonsense, misconceptions and hype that is out there so that you can develop a sensible technique for promoting your site.

First of all, what puts a page at the top of the rankings?

The truth is that all the search engines use their unique, top magic formula, algorithms to position websites. Their goal would be to deliver relevant, accurate, and up-to-date info to their searching public. To achieve this, they may be in a continual war against Search engine optimization experts who would seek to skew those serps in order to put their own customers at the top.

There are two "methods" for getting top rankings: so-called "Black Hat" and "White Hat". White Hat refers to approaches that work with the search engines - to deliver high quality, related, exact, timely information. Black Hat refers to approaches that make an effort to bypass that by numerous ways of cheating. Black Hat approaches can work. but generally only for a short period of time until all the PhD’s at Google determine what you are doing and find methods to plug that loophole - and suspend you while they are at it.

No person understands for certain what ranking factors work, but these are the types which have been well proven, have survived the test of time, and make intuitive sense, given the aim of the various search engines themselves:

•Quality themed content, and lots of it. This will go over and above just stuffing in your key terms as much as possible. The SE’s are getting far better at analyzing themes by means of "latent semantic indexing", which basically implies employing artificial intelligence to sort out what the site is about, instead of just what keywords and phrases are on it. To achieve this you'll want to provide your keyword and key phrase, undoubtedly, as well as other keywords which might be linked to that.

•Links for your web site. In general, the more the merrier. But not all links are made equal. Links on themed websites are usually worth more than on web pages that are not associated with your theme, ie links to your outdoor web-site from another angling site are well worth a lot more than if they are derived from a cooking site. Links from "bad neighborhoods" count for absolutely nothing. They don’t penalize you for other people linking to you, but they definitely don’t reward you for links originating from link farms, Free-For-All pages (FFA), and some other sites they consider to be bad. Links from "authority internet sites" are worth a lot more. Some sign of a site’s value is given by the Google Page Rank - the higher the better. In time, the Page Rank will probably become theme specific - ie your site could have a high PR for one theme, and a low one for another.

•Old sites - ie which have been around for a long time are valued a lot more than new ones - in general your Page rank will probably rise with time, other factors being equal.

•New sites are also worthy - try to remember, the SE’s wish to deliver hot news, so they will give an initial priority to new web-sites, and also to new links pointing to web sites, as they may indicate that there is some hot, recent, news on that site.

•Links OUT to authority sites are also worth points. But do not have too many. As long as you're not penalized for any bad links coming in, you can be penalized if you link out to bad neighborhoods.

•The keywords themselves - obviously some key phrases are a lot more competitive than others. Aim to get ranked for your most specific keywords first. Should you be a local business, then tag on the name of your city or state to the keyword.

•Unique content. The final factor that search engines like yahoo wish to accomplish is to deliver to the public 40,000 pages that all say the same thing! Duplicate content is immediately recognized and filtered out by the SE’s. Do not just slap up the same articles or blog posts that everyone else is using. You will need unique content. That does apply equally to your own site, and also to the websites which are linking to you.

The Myths

•An SEO expert can guarantee you a top placement in the major search engines. Nonsense! Of course he cannot. He or she does not own the SE, so he can’t control them, so this individual cannot guarantee any particular result. All they can guarantee is the actions he will take to try to enable you to get there. And even if he could guarantee you a top placement, it might be WAY beyond your price range (whatever it might be)!

•An Web optimization expert can get you 100 PR5, 6, 7, or 8 links for $100. In your dreams. A single link on a PR5 page would probably cost you $50 per month. The higher the PR, the more costly. There are, actually, only half a dozen methods for getting links on high-PR pages:

•Buy them (very expensive - you will pay close to $20 annually per link for PR2 links! - on 100 links that is $2,000 per year!)

•Talk them into putting a link on their website for free (!).

•Get them to sign up for your affiliate program.

•Provide them user generated content that they Would like to put on their web-sites.

•Put them on low PR pages and wait for a PR to rise.

•Have a really fantastic site that people voluntarily put links up and tell others about you.

•You cane easily see the number of links that point to your page when using the link: command in Google or Yahoo. This command is broken and does not produce any meaningful results. To test that go to Google and type in link:myweddingfavors.com -

you will get 812 results (as of writing this - it may well change.). However visit Yahoo and do the same. You will get about 253 results. However, do a search for "myweddingfavors.com" (in any of the SE’s) and you will see the number of pages really are linking to them! The fact is, the SE’s don’t want you to know the number of links you have. Why not? Because it encourages you to cheat! The only individual who can care how many backlinks there are, is an individual who is trying to do SEO - and the SE’s are at war with Search engine optimization.

However - listed here is a Google Hack that discloses the real story: type in to your browser the following search phrase, substituting yourdomain name details of course (Note how the first one doesn't include the dot com at the end).

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=.yourdomain. - www.yourdomain.com

So - no one can guarantee that the links these people create will either be indexed at all or, if they are, will appear in that link: command.
