At this time there are thousands of U.S. physicians who believe that the government needs to step in and offer a funded national health care insurance program to its citizens, claiming that it would save billions of dollars nationwide and would provide medical care to every citizen. It was several years ago that the government, and Congress in particular, attempted to institute a national health insurance plan, but it was embroiled in controversy and ultimately fell apart under duress from the medical and insurance industries, but now doctors argue again that it is necessary. This group of physicians, however, contends that Congress's current efforts to create a prescription drug plan for senior citizens and those with disabilities will only result in funneling more of the government's money to private companies and would not benefit consumers. The doctors want to see a singe payer system implemented, essentially an enhanced version of Medicare for everyone, which would cover everyone in the country, not just the elderly and disabled. Having caused Medicare expenses to rise by literally billions of dollars without having accomplished anything that the idea promised, health maintenance organizations were once the only bright spot in health care reform efforts. Created with the ideas of market efficiency, hospitals owned by profit driven investors have been plagued by constant scandals. Doctors contend that pharmaceutical companies and drug manufacturers, which have made the largest profits and also paid the least amount of taxes in the past, sell medicine at a rate that most people can't afford even though they need them. This outline of a single payer system first was published in the esteemed journal of medicine. The parties in favor consisted of a group of physicians that were led by the former editor of the American Medical Journal and two former Surgeons General of the United States. An analysis conducted by a lecturer from the Harvard School of Medicine indicated that the current system is out of control and will not be able to sustain itself. He further argues that it is not like the single payer system is the best choice available, it is really the only one left. But, the present president of the American Medical Association told us in a statement, that the single payer health care system, is something that the AMA is still against. He has remarked that initiating a singer payer system in America they will be getting rid of one set of issues and then creating a whole new set. The qualities present in single payer systems include the development of an inefficient bureaucracy which will lead to a decline of the authority of doctors and patients over important decision making powers, a slower adoption of newer technologies and facility maintenance issues, and lengthy waiting periods for obtaining basic health care services. The lobbying branch of the managed health care profession, the American Association of Health Plans, additionally reported that it does not support the doctor's proposal because it would extirpate profit for health maintenance groups and hospitals. According to the American Medical Association, the physicians who signed the proposal only account for less than one percent of all the physicians in the U.S. Yet another doctor claimed that it is important that a significant quantity of physicians, who were typically entirely against government run health programs in the past, is now willing to sign off on a universal health care coverage for all Americans.
