Internet Marketing - A Clarification

By: Brent Thomason

So Exactly what is internet marketing? Internet marketing is applying the internet as a tool to research a product(s), then researching that product(s) competitors. Then based upon that research using the internet as a marketing, and or advertising resource to market and sale a specific product, or generate a list of potential customers or sales leads for the sale of a product, products, and or service.
Simply put, internet marketers are people or organizations focusing on and specializing in utilizing the internet with their combined talents and know how to research and locate a product to promote that have the potential of the highest level of sale conversions to promote, then create the most amount of exposure that will make the most level of sales with the lowest amount of resources.

Selecting the product:
In the businessof internet marketing, choosing the right product(s) to market, promote, and sale is key. as a beginning internet marketer, you will likely have almost immediate failure if you target a market that is flooded such as insurance, credit card offers, real estate, or mortgage lead generation. You also likely to fail if you target a product or service that has minimal interest for example if you were trying to market, promote and sale an E-Book on how to cook roaches.

There are many software products on the market that help internet marketers find, sift through, research, and decide on great selling products that they can use, and make great money promoting. Since some products at some point eventually die off, and or become flooded with internet marketing guys, true internet marketers are very skilled at the process of locating products, and are regularly on the hunt for new products to they can promote and sale.

If you are considering following the path of an internet marketer that will be researching, and selecting multiple products and niches to promote, then you should consider this when pursuing your research. as still today in the old days prior to the internet, the big marketing company?s would put up thousands of dollars in intense research just to determine if a particular product was even worth investing the time, effort, and resources into promoting it. Often times big marketing firms would utilize all this time and money in research just to decide not to launch the promotion of a given product. Yes product selection must be viewed as a main factor in the internet marketer's process, and can not be taken lightly.

Advertising
A simple example of just pure advertising would be a television commercial that just states the great things about say a big bank. The aim of that commercial is mostly brand building or name recognition, and not necessarily to get a customer or sale on the spot. In other words, when this large bank runs that television commercial, they most likely will not have have someone sitting by the phone waiting on a huge rush of immediate phone calls to be generated right after the commercial airs.

Many companies utilize many different forms of advertising such as television, newspaper and magazine articles, classified ads in newspapers, radio, co-op and direct coupon mail outs, and phone directory advertising. Successful internet marketers realize that it is not that much different with them, and have over time created, and have in place and ready to use tons of different avenues for getting massive amounts of online exposure at their fingertips most of which requires very littlemoney if any.

Marketing
An example of just pure marketing was in the old days with telemarketers. The telemarketers for the most part were mainly a lead generator, some did finalize sales, but with many companies such as mortgage, insurance, or service oriented companies organizations, were lead generators. In these situations, the telemarketer was truely marketing because they were essentially not really making calls to just build a brand name. The telemarketer's role was mostly to develop a lead that they considered through some level of the customers interest to be a strong potential buying customer, and turn it over to a sales department to make a sale, or close a deal.

Pure marketing from an internet marketer's view for example would be a simple internet form that is used to grab a potential buyer's contact information. For example, if you saw a ad on a website that states "Make $400.00 aweek online", using a form asking for your name and email address, that would be a form of just marketing. The internet marketer is just looking for potential customers to add to a list of people that have an interest in making money online.

Now keep all of this in mind when you're putting together campaigns. In the old days, hundreds and thousands of dollars were paid to pro level writers to create the most effective telemarketing pitch, and if you ever were unlucky enough to have worked for any of these telemarketing firms, you know that most of them required that you followed this script to the T. Many of these scripts were thought to be corporate knowledge that most telemarketing firms protected almost as they would secret formulas. So yes you should, spend adequate time and effort in creating a initial pitch you plan to utilize for that initial email blast or ad or what ever method you use for your initial exposure.

Advertising / Marketing:
Both advertising and marketing often share the same space in a lot of situations, and typically sales will stand alone. For example, in many large organizations, you may have a advertising and marketing division that is separate from the sales division. The advertising and marketing division essentially develops marketing and advertising campaigns together to create incoming leads for the sales division.

Now let's look at an example of where the line turns gray differentiating between marketing and advertising is with campaigns such as say with a postcard mail out. If the piece that the company mailed out just has the company's name on it, and what they did but with no phone numbers, address, or contact information on it, that would be just plain advertising, and not necessarily a specific form of marketing or lead generation piece. In most cases, advertising and marketing roll in together. For example, if you see a form on a web site that says "Make $300.00 per day online" along with the brand name Steve?s Internet Marketing School, and a place to submit your email address and name that would be an good example of advertising (Lead generation or list building) and marketing (brand name building) both together.

Sales
After introducing a product, and creating a lead, you want someone that is a strong salesman or closer that can close the deal and actually get the customer to get the checkbook or credit card out, and seal the deal. In most instances with internet marketers, the sale is closed online with the typical buy now button. Many times for large product launches, thousands of dollars are used in creating the potentially most effective sales page to insure the highest level of sales every time the page is seen. Consider this when developing your own sales page or pages. This is where you would have to be wearing your sales hat. Quite often this is the last chance you will have at making the sale. Most times once the potential buyer closes that page, their gone for good.

In Conclusion
Essentially the internet can be used as a marketing tool or lead generation tool, an advertising resource just for brand name promotion, a virtual salesperson or all together. Look at it this way, If you have a web site that introduces your firm, and on the same page has a form to fill out or a phone number to call for a interested consumer to contact you, then you are using that web site as both a brand name building and advertising piece for brand name building and name recognition, and also as a marketing or lead generation piece. And if you use a buy now button on that same page where the visitor can purchase the product right then in real time, that one page has become an advertising piece, a marketing piece, and a salesperson all in one.

Successful internet marketers over time have developed, acquired, and honed the skills needed to inexpensively reach hundreds of thousands of targeted potential buyers, present advertising, marketing, and sales landing pages to those prospects in such a way as to get the highest levels of response that closes sales, or gets some desired response from a internet visitor. These are the skills that have positioned true internet marketers in today's business environment to work wherever and when ever they want to work, and make the kind of money they do.

These skills are not been mastered overnight, but built on by a relentless collection of knowledge, and acquired marketing resources that have catapulted them into the absolute hottest positions any entrepreneur could ask to be in. The journey is truly an investment of time and minimal money that can be started on a small budget, and pay for itself along the way.

One of the best bits of advice I have ever received was to begin by reviewing all the internet money making systems around, set a budget which for me then was around three hundred dollars, start purchasing the systems, fully implement and learn everything I could from each system. Once I had purchased and implemented my budgets worth of various systems, I would stop spending until the systems I had implemented had made the money from my budget back. This was perfect advice. All of the systems paid for them selves over time supplying me with a huge amount of knowledge and tools, and looking back I wish I would have set my budget higher, and ran up the ladder a little faster.
