By: Justin DiMateo

Raising a man's sperm can assist to improve the chances of conception. A sperm count is the amount of sperm present in a given sample of semen. Low sperm counts may lead to infertility or may make getting pregnant more difficult. If your sperm count is low, however, it does not necessarily mean that you are infertile. It may simply mean that certain lifestyle or environmental factors should be changed or avoided to improve sperm count.
Men who are trying to conceive should avoid using illicit drugs and should quit smoking. This may help to increase sperm count and lead to an improvement in overall health, which is also vital in a successful birth. Quitting drinking or drinking only moderately may also help.
Avoid fast foods as well. Switch to a diet rich in protein, whole grains and vegetables. In certain situations, hormones released during periods of stress may damage sperm. Reduce your stress level by taking time to relax, exercise and eliminate stressors wherever possible. Be careful, though. Over-exercising may be detrimental to fertility. Similarly, exercises that place stress on the testicles (cycling) may be detrimental to fertility and sperm count.
It's also been suggested that sperm count is highest in the morning. Men with low sperm counts may consider having sex in the morning or early afternoon hours to improve their chances of conceiving. Timing intercourse with ovulation cycles may also help. Going two or three days between ejaculations may help to raise sperm count. Couples should speak with a fertility specialist for more information about coordinating intercourse with ovulation cycles.
Specific vitamins have also been shown to help improve sperm production and/or motility. Zinc, selenium, amino acids, Vitamin C and Vitamin E may be helpful in improving sperm health. The amino acid L-carnitine may be very helpful in improving sperm motility and, therefore, improving the chances that more sperm reach the egg.
Following a semen analysis, the doctor may recommend one or more treatments or lifestyle changes that may help to increase sperm count and fertility. In certain situations, it may be helpful to explore possible procedures such as in vitro fertilization and other artificial reproductive technologies (ART) that may help infertile couples successfully conceive.
Couples experiencing infertility should ensure that the couple is tested or diagnosed for potential sympoms of infertility. Certain tests, examinations and questions may help narrow down the cause of infertility, which is often the first step in overcoming the condition.
