Most bulbs like to be planted in a location with lots of sun and well drained soil. This can be very important for the growth of the plant. If soil is too wet, a raised bed can be made to help drain the soil. This can also be a nice looking feature in the garden. Bearded iris bulbs look great in a raised bed. A bulb is extremely similar to a huge dormant bud; the leaves are represented by the scales, with the center having the embryo stem. Bulbs are plants that are compact and in storage. The tuber, on the other hand, is a strong body, with buds attached from it. Some tubers represent thick stems, as the Irish potato, and some thickened roots, as probably the sweet-potato, and some both stem and root, as the turnip, parsnip, and beet. Bulbs can be classified into two groups: the hardy kinds, to be planted in fall; and the tender kinds, to be planted in spring. The fall-planted bulbs are of two groups: the early spring bloomers, such as crocus, tulip, hyacinth, narcissus, snowdrop; and the ones the bloom in summer, such as lilies. The treatments of the two groups are so comparable that they may be discussed collectively. All these bulbs may be planted as soon as they are mature; but in practice they are held till late September or October before they are planted , as nothing is gained by planting sooner, and, moreover, the ground is usually not ready to receive them until older plantings are removed. These bulbs are planted in the fall (1) because they keep better in the ground than when stored; (2) because they will get a small start in the winter and fall and be ready for the first heat of spring; (3) and because it is usually not possible to get on the ground early enough in spring to plant them with much hope of success for that season. The bulbs are dormant until spring, so far as appearances go; they are mulched to guarantee that they will not start growing in warm weather of winter or fall, and to protect the ground from heaving. To secure excellent bulbs and of the sought after varieties, place the order early. Lily bulbs for sale along with bearded iris bulbs for sale are some of the most popular ones. For flower gardens, the large and mature bulbs should be secured; for colonizing in shrubbery or on the lawn, the smaller sizes may be sufficient. Take a firm stand that your bulbs shall be first class, for there is wide difference in the quality; even with the best of treatment, fantastic results cannot be achieved from poor bulbs.
