History of ESP Guitars

By: Steve Miller

Electric Sound Products, known as ESP, began in Tokyo Japan in 1975 as a business that supplied custom substitute pieces for electric guitars. Nevertheless, the first ESP guitar was not built until 1976. ESP Guitars and replacement parts continued to be sold solely in Japan for nearly ten years before moving into the United States marketplace. In 1983 their replacement accessories ended up being made accessible in the U.S.. Finally, in 1984 their electric guitars made their American arrival.

In 1984 - 1985 ESP Guitars have been attracting some attention from skillful axeman such as Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones) and Vernon Reid (Living Colour).

The next significant musician to encounter ESP Guitars was George Lynch of Dokken, while shopping for guitar accessories as he was doing a tour in Japan. When George discovered that ESP made custom electric guitars, the prototype "Kamikaze" was made for him. The Kamikaze was the first signature model to be made.

Soon after, more players started to take notice of ESP and started jamming on their guitars in the late 80's. Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield of Metallica were 2 of the bigger names.

In fact, speakin of James Hetfield, an ESP guitar which he used when Metallica first began to turn out to be popular, got the ESP Corporation into some legal issues. The guitar he played, known as the EXP, was a duplicate of the Gibson Explorer. Though guitar companies were producing replicas of their electric guitars for years, Gibson decided to sue ESP Guitars. The quality of the EXP guitar was so good that players had been buying them up and this was apparently slicing into the profits of Gibson's guitars. Finally, ESP lost the court case and adjusted their design to the now recognized 'EX' design.

In mid 2002, ESP gross sales began to increase at a rapid rate making them one of many quickest growing businesses at that era. This upsurge in gross sales was directly connected to Fender Guitars buying out Jackson Guitars. Jackson was the company that ESP Guitars was competing with in the 1980's and 90's the buy-out of Jackson Guitars, many of the high profile axemen jumped ship and went over to ESP Guitars. Guitar players like Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, discovered it was an easy transition to change over to ESP Guitars due to the top quality and comparable thrash-metal aggresive designs.

ESP guitars are nonetheless very popular today. During the 2008 Winter NAMM show, ESP introduced over fifty new guitar and bass models. In addition they have an ideal selection of high profile guitar players on their roster including Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield of Metallica, Wayne Static of Static-X, Alexi Laiho Children of Bodom, Will Adler of Lamb of God, Ron Wood, George Lynch, and the newest member, Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi. With the great quality that ESP Guitars produce, its a no brainer to recognize they're going to be around for many many more years to come.
