In the simplest terms, a cool roof is extremely reflective and can substantially emit the low amounts of heat it takes in. By reflecting and giving off the sun's energy back to the atmosphere, the roof's surface stays cooler and shift less heat to the building's indoors, compared to a normal roof. A roof is determined as cool subject to two radiative properties: solar reflectance, or the portion of solar energy that is redirected by the roof; and thermal emittance, or the proportional capability of the roof surface to radiate absorbed heat. Solar reflectance and thermal emittance both are computed on a scale from zero to 1. The bigger the number, the cooler the roof. No overall definition holds up for a cool roof, so various codes and plans have their own prerequisites for minimal radiative attributes that make a cool roof. Just a few years ago, managers had a determined number of product options when it fell to cool roofing. Now, thanks to progressive requirement, managers have hundreds of cool wares from which to choose. A cool roofing product exists that can fit almost any roofing specification. By lowering the amount of heat shifted to a building's inner facility, cool roofs offer several additional gains, which includes: lower energy bills and longer lasting performance lives for roof systems and cooling apparatus.
