Florence Nightingale was born on 12th May, 1820 in Florence. As she was born in Florence, her name was changed accordingly due to her great work. She was very close to poor people. She was able to get education facilities easily. She was not comfortable with the fact that normally society did not provide enough facilities for women to get education. She started taking care of ill. She went to hospitals in London and other places to find job opportunities for women. She was a successful nurse and a writer too. She was named as “the lady with the lamp” because she helped many soldiers in Crimean War by treating their wounds. She laid foundation of the first nursing school in the world. It was established in London with the name of St Thomas’ Hospital. She belonged to a rich family. Her family wanted her to be a socialite but she did not accept their offer and continued her journey as a nurse. Once she said that she is called by God as nurse. Just like all other people who wanted to change the world, she also had to face their family first. Similarly, Nightingale had to face her family because it did not want her to do this job. She was in love with what she was doing. She used to read nursing books. Her family tried to stop her but she was so determined that nobody could change her mind. She made a deal with her father that if he would allow her to get education in Kaiserwerth hospital in Germany then she would not tell anybody about her plans and in this way her family will not be embarrassed. When Florence Nightingale graduated, she was back in London. Here, she found a job in a hospital. She saved many lives. She was just like an angel for the people. She became ill but people came to her to get assistance. Indeed she was fighting for a noble cause. Being noble is not that much easy. You have to pay a great price for it. She is known as the founder of modern nursing. She trained many nurses. When she became ill, she went blind in the year 1895. So, now she was being nursed. She helped out many soldiers in the wars. She treated their wounds of both sides. She had great passion to become a nurse. This passion led her to live a great life. In St Thomas’ Hospital, there is the Florence Nightingale Museum. She was very good in mathematics too. She was a very good writer. She wrote a book with title Suggestions for Thought to Searchers after Religious Truth. This was a three volume work that was not published. She was not happy with the lifestyle of her mother and her sister. According to her, it was totally lethargic. That is why she left this life style and started doing more noble things. Her work will stay intact as a guiding material for the present and the future generations.
