Edged Weapons and Safely Escorting Prisoners.7 Guidelines to Ensure Your Safety:

By: Iza Scott

1) Because many individuals who illegally carry a knife or bladed weapon frequently carry several concealed in different places on their body, any person who has been restrained following being involved in a bladed weapon incident needs to be thoroughly and “carefully” searched. Be careful never to suffer a dangerous “needle stick” injury by hidden syringes that could be infected by blood borne disease.
2) Make sure that the individual is firmly restrained and is unable to exchange his own weapons with makeshift weapons which might be lying around. (Ashtrays, drinking glasses, bottles, pens, pencils, or something that may be in arms reach that may be used against you or people around you in a violent fashion
3) If it is necessary to transport everyone within a venue or on the street past any members of the public, avoid doing it without an associate unless it is absolutely crucial. Many members among the armed gang culture who may still be in the immediate locale may be carrying bladed and edged weapons and might come to their friend’s help, given the opportunity.
4) If the individual is especially violent, it may be that they are likely to have similarly violent friends in the immediate vicinity. Unless it is totally essential, wait to move the person until adequate back up is present and preferably wait for the police to arrive.
5) Be watchful of the fact that many people might be under the influence of drugs or struggling with a mental condition. Whilst you will need to apply the suitable methods of restraint in accordance with assignment directives and legal rights of the individual, don't present them any opportunity to initiate an attack upon you or others with an makeshift weapon or potentially harmful item that may be accidently left in their reach.
6) Establish the potential threats to yourself or the individual before starting the escort and should violent conflict occur during the escort, act upon them instantly and safely using restraining methods which have been approved by state or federal laws and regulations. Keep in mind that after you have detained the person that they're under your duty of care.
7) Acceptable Use of Force.
The concept of use of force in a knife assault is somewhat clear-cut, with several exceptions. Security officers are sometimes punished in the courts for using disproportionate force when handling offenders where their physical response is not appropriate to the level of danger that the offender is presenting in the course of the incident.
The security officer is very often using a completely different mindset to an offender and will engage in a violent encounter with a different set of goals. It's also true that offenders have a definite psychological advantage over security officers by virtue of the fact that they have frequently already formed an attack mindset before the security guard is conscious that danger is on the horizon. While security officers constantly need to be considering the legal ramifications of their behaviour in response to an assault, a bladed weapon assault leaves no room for this kind of divided thinking, as fatal consequences could occur as the results of indecision to defend oneself without delay. The offender is not going to be constrained by such reasoning as the very nature of a knife attack is a callous and possibly lethal act. Because of this, professional security officers have to be particularly alert and both physically and psychologically equipped for this kind of potentially deadly armed confrontation. You need to remember that as a security officer it is not your job to punish offenders, but then again, a knife or bladed weapon confrontation has to be treated with the utmost gravity. Defending yourself legally before a situation turns violent is in many ways as significant as not being harmed during an actual encounter.
