Creating a theme in drupal is fundamentally taking a lackluster website and giving it a specific look and feel. Drupal uses what they call themes to influence the way your site is shown to the end client. It does this via css and template files which are basically ordinary html files with php snippets. Most people get overwhelmed by the entire theming thing but, it actually isn't anything more that just understanding aged html and a little css. You will have a theme folder where every one of your changes should be made. By no means adjust any core files. This lets drupal to do its thing and pass it to your theme folder where it will magically alter the output to what you have included in your theme. For new themers its easiest to take a glimpse at the standard drupal themes and work them backwards. Open up zen and garland and check out the file structure, most have essentially the same files. Once you recognize this then open up the files in isolation. Analyze each one, you will notice its just html and a little php. With a little work you will begin being capable of doing thes themes on your own so leap right in, as long as you aren't altering the core files you have no way to lastingly hurt anything.
