Color Confusion: Where and How to Find Perfect Wedding Color Themes

By: Kate Mendelsen

Pastels feel homey and comfortable, vibrant shades tend to be royal, and black is definitely in style this year. If you ask wedding planners, photographers and even your relatives, each person will have his or her own opinion on what color is great for weddings. Some base it on luck, others tend to reminisce an unforgettable wedding and thus connect it to the colors used. It may take a little effort to find the right color combination that works for both you and your spouse-to-be, but look around, get feedback from trusted friends, and remember to be creative.
Having trouble choosing which advice to follow? If you want some originality and want to come up with the theme by yourself, here are some points to consider in choosing colors that you can definitely call your own.
Research. The initial step is to know what colors you and your partner like. Be familiar with the shades and swatches that represent you as a couple well. This would come handy once you go out color-hunting, and don't forget to also note which colors you'd never consider for your own wedding. Once you have a set of candidates, you can start narrowing down the choices.
Location. Any venue could be spiced up once matched with the perfect palette. For example, a light shade of blue might not look good in an uptown city wedding but would greatly compliment the waves at a beach wedding.
Heighten the mood. If you're planning on having a hyped jumping wedding, then baby pink certainly isn't the shade for you. An earth-toned wedding would have a peaceful effect while the darker family of reds can produce a vintage romantic atmosphere perfect for hopeless romantics.
Be inspired. Browse through items in your own home, look through artworks, and surf the web for great color combinations. It could be anywhere from your mom's old china to the dress that you wore the night he proposed.
Check the seasons. Winter weddings would be majestic in hues of silver and blue while summer shades of orange and yellow would give off a fresh feel. Getting married during the fall would be oh-so-romantic with those amber crisp colors.
Flower Power. One dominant detail that could really set the motif is the flowers. Get familiar with the different types, kinds and shades of blooms and what color may be available. Try to create a scheme which would go well with the flower arrangements.
Linens and glass wares. Along with your wedding planner, try to look through a variety of linens that you could consider to use for the reception. If you like a certain shade, use it as your that dominant hue and then find other tints to accent it. Glass wares can also act as a dramatic splash of color for any plain table top. Remember not to overdo it though; try to keep the colors solid and minimal to achieve a coherent overall effect.
