The human hand is one of the most versatile things in the world; it only makes sense that work gloves are every bit as versatile. Because we rely on our hands so much, for so many tasks every day, it is clearly important to afford them as much protection as possible. By the very virtue of their importance, use and versatility, we subject our hands to a wide range of very real dangers every day, some critical, others perhaps more subtle yet nonetheless still highly dangerous over the longer term. By placing our hands in danger every day we run the risk of reducing their use, reducing their versatility and dexterity, and clearly the ramifications of this are severe. Health and safety rules may sometimes seem a little as though they are concerned with extremely unlikely scenarios, but every year a huge number of people suffer hand injuries, many of whom will go on to have significantly altered lives as a result. Companies need to make sure that worker's hands are as thoroughly protected as possible, since not only is the health and safety of employees at stake, but in the event of an accident, compensation and litigation expenses could be severe. But just providing work gloves or general purpose work gloves for everyone is clearly inappropriate, and we are fortunate today that manufacturing technology and materials technology has managed to develop a wide range of work gloves and safety protection for hands that is almost as broad in terms of versatility as the human hand is. Our hands can grip tightly, lift heavy objects and withstand harsh conditions and rough handling. Yet at the same time our hands can be used to detect even the slightest touch, pick up the smallest objects and undertake incredibly minute and precise feats of dexterity. Whether it's wielding the tools required to forge steel or carrying out work with micro circuitry, our hands can adapt and provide us with a seemingly never-ending supply of tools wherever we go and whatever we do. Work gloves need to be approached with this in mind, and an awareness that we are no longer living in a time when work gloves or hand safety protection clothing is simply a matter of covering up as much of the hand as possible in material which is as thick and resilient as possible. Thick leather gauntlets or chain mail gloves clearly offer a good deal of protection if you happen to be felling trees, working with chain saws or manhandling heavy machinery. But they become a little inconvenient if you happen to be typing on a keyboard or soldering together elements of a circuit board which may only be a millimetre in diameter. Clearly it makes sense to ensure that protection is suited and appropriate to the task, yet at the same time, is offering the level and type of protection that may be necessary. Of course, it's easy to think that workers who are just typing on a keyboard, creating circuit boards or using small, delicate tools or instrumentation do not need any form of hand protection. Similarly you may argue that employees who work in the packaging department, boxing up or bagging up products ready for shipping don't need any hand protection. But to think this is to grossly underestimate the risks, over the longer term, that our hands are exposed to. Generally it is easy to see the short term, immediate dangers to which our hands may be exposed. It can be much less easy to identify the longer term dangers, and yet they certainly exist. Work gloves and general purpose work gloves need to be sourced with a view not just to the immediate and apparent dangers, but also to those longer term dangers and risks. For example, many people who work in offices or who use computers for lengthy periods of time each day will be subject to a range of risks which could easily lead to a repetitive strain injury. RSI may not be considered as great a danger as that which may be experienced by someone working with a circular saw, but ultimately the dangers can easily lead to permanent loss of feeling, constant pain, loss of dexterity or reduced movement, and any one of these is likely to be life changing, as well as potentially expensive.
