The ideal backpack weight should be no more than 15% of the carrier's weight. That means that a child who weighs 60-75 lbs should carry no more than 10 pounds. We've all seen kids dragging around packs loaded with more than twice that amount! When purchasing a backpack, look for the smallest, most lightweight pack. Backpacks with wide, padded straps and a variety of compartments allow for better weight distribution of the contents of the pack. But these extra features don't do anything if your child doesn't use both straps to carry their pack. Encourage them to use both straps and to tighten them to allow the backpack to rest on the back of the hips, rather than hitting lower and altering their gait. Sling-type book bags are an option for your student, provided that they place the weight of the bag in the middle of their back to distribute weight evenly and to the most stable part of the back. Roller bags are another option for reducing strain on the neck, back and shoulders if your students don't have a lot of stairs to negotiate in their schools. Consider discussing ideal backpack weight and carrying with your child's teacher, school nurse, administrators, or contacting an expert to present a backpack safety presentation. Help increase your child's awareness of posture for activities including standing and walking, sitting at the computer, at a desk and during playtime. Backward shoulder rolls before and after carrying backpacks can help to prevent soreness. You might also consider an evaluation with an Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist trained in postural stabilization to address soft tissue restrictions and provide a home program of stretching and strengthening for their individual needs. (We know that children sometimes listen to someone other than their parents!) Now, it's time to consider how heavy your purse is...or your briefcase!
