An introduction to Calming Music

By: Andy Penbram

The term 'Relaxing Music' has become enormously overused and is loosely applied to a full range of diverse styles. In essence it is new age music intended to produce positive feelings, inspiration and relaxation.

The style first appeared in the 1970's in Asia with artists including Kitaro generating what was at that time spacey sounding futuristic compositions by using banks of synthesizers. Kitaro would frequently render performances of the impressionist music of Debussy.

Now, the typical new age sound is likely to be made up of sustained synth pads with sequenced runs repeating underneath, this is repeatedly accompanied by an underlying drone bass or pedal giving a slightly mesmerizing and soothing effect.

This is the type of music commonly used for massages, curative sessions or other therapies.

You'll notice though a lot more different styles that come bundled together in the New Age Music genre. There's a good deal of melodic music, some piano based or maybe around some other solo instrument. There is an increasing trend of using classical instruments alongside the dreamy sythesized sounds. This is now and again referred to as neo-classical.

The 'New Age' label has become a genre group of its own encompassing several of the subsequent sub genres;

Alternative
Ambient
Celtic
Contemporary Instrumental
Energy Healing
Environmental
Ethnic Fusion
Healing
Meditation
Nature
Neo-Classical
New Age
Progressive Alternative
Progressive Electronic
Relaxation
Self-Help
Shamanic
Solo Instrumental
Space
Spiritual
Techno-Tribal
Yoga

As you'll be able to see the term 'Relaxing Music' has turned out to be somewhat overworked and at present the term encompasses a good deal more than just the emblematic 'wallpaper' music that it has become famous for.

Soothing music is becoming more and more well-liked at the moment in this ever increasing world of anxiety and hassle . It is being played by many people as background music in an endeavor to tranquilize their day and bring a little bit of peace and serenity into their lives. This new age music is also used by expert therapists and counselors to sooth their clients and in reality lots of different forms of practitioners of alternative therapies such as Reiki, hypnotherapy, meditation, yoga etc.

The music can have a unique but subtle effect on the body itself when used together with some of these therapies. The chakras or natural energy points in the body are enormously receptive to subtle vibrations. The monotonous bass lines and recurring melodies will often sympathize with the body's natural vibrations and help to activate them. This will aid any self healing process that the body is undertaking and in many cases will balance the mind and the body resulting in a general feeling of well being.
