An Acoustic Starter Guitar is a vital selection for a number of reasons and there are lots of ways to get it wrong. I've made bad decisions when buying guitars and I would like to help in case you are thinking of a starter acoustic guitar for the very first time. My first guitar was a present from my Dad once I was 16. It was a big body, no name acoustic guitar with an electric pickup that he'd bought from a man he worked with. I do not know why he thought it could be a good idea as I'd not asked for one and hadn't shown any interest in any kind of instrument previously. He had no way of knowing the huge and life long changes it would make for me when he bought it. I'm 50 now and looking back on a love affair with guitars which has lasted all my grownup life. I didn't have a clue the best way to tune or play it at first. All I knew was that I REALLY liked it. Strumming some casual strings and enjoying the way it sounded was an introduction to a world of music. I played for a couple of hours each evening to begin with or until my fingers bled whichever came soonest. I had chosen the world's worst guitar tutor - me! If only I had known a little bit of what I know now when I started out with my acoustic guitar. For a start I wouldn't have gotten the music book I did. It was old fashioned and stuffed with outdated songs that did nothing for me emotionally. Tip no 1 - focus on what you enjoy. Learn to play the type of songs that you take pleasure in. When you have a favorite band play their music. It is going to make the experience a pleasure instead of a chore. There is a large quantity of excellent music that can be purchased or downloaded from the internet for free that you will never have a chance to play more than a tiny fraction of it. Once I had some of the fundamentals under my belt I fancied attempting a different guitar and set off to my local second hand store with a hard-earned £25 in my excited little hands. I purchased the biggest, reddest guitar they had just because it looked so damn sexy! The action on the guitar (the gap between the strings and the fretboard) was huge. It made it very difficult to play and everything was much harder because of it. Tip no 2 - get a guitar that sounds as good as it looks. Buying a guitar could be very like shopping for a car in that we purchase it emotionally. We fall in love with the way in which it looks before we ever drive it. If you do not know enough about guitars to decide on one which 'feels' right as well as sounding good take someone with you who does. If you don't know anybody like that do some homework before you buy. There are plenty of guitar magazines and review site online that should offer you a good idea about the numerous producers and models available. Some Guitarists will inform you that you can play any song with only three chords and there is some truth in that. Learning a couple of easy chords to get you started is very important. Keep in mind that horrible music book I purchased? It held me back for years. Tip no three - get some tuition. If you already know somebody with a guitar get them to spend just a little time with you. Study some primary chords and strumming. It will move you ahead much better and faster than attempting to learn on your own. I would advocate guitar classes except it's good to find the correct teacher. A bad trainer can put you off music for life. A good instructor will be able to recognise the place you need help and how best to practise. Tip no 4 - and maybe the most important is buy the very best guitar you can afford. Learning to play is difficult enough without having to wrestle with a cheap no-name guitar as well. Too many individuals decide to purchase an affordable guitar not knowing if they will stick with it and afraid that they may waste the money. A good high quality guitar will get you off to the right start. It will be a lot easier to play, sound a lot better and keep in tune longer. Bear some of these ideas in mind when buying a starter acoustic guitar and you'll stand a a lot better chance of learning the instrument and it will give you a lifetime of enjoyment in return.
