Set against the backdrop of the Wild West of 1911, Red Dead Redemption offers and interesing peep into a world long gone. The game can be seen as a successor to the 2004 game, Red Dead Revolver. Released by Rockstar Games it is available for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The game is set in a world teeming with violence and excitement. the world is vast; stretching for miles upon miles, it creates a wonderful open game. the vastness of the open world allows you a huge amount of freedom to explore the beautifully rendered countryside. After the initial awe dies, the vastness can become a pain while traveling. John Marstons is the hero of the story. Bring down his former associates is the task the government is forcing on John. kidnapping his wife and kid, the government tries to force John to turn against his former gang members and bring them in. Being an open game there are a lot of ways this can be accomplished. While traveling across the vast country, the game offers quite a few interesting surprises. Without warning you can be attacked by wild animals or robbers, or you can even stumble upon people needing your help. The game gives you the option to help them, or ignore them.. Other interesting activities include partaking in public hangings, or shooting people who disrupts the peace by shooting their guns into the air in town. There are even a few mindless distractions to keep you busy, if you really want to. These include hunting animals for pelt and meat, or taking on another in a standoff or gambling for money. The options even included choosing between different kinds of horse breeds. During your travels you will experience a lot of smaller gunfights, but the real treat is getting into a full blown shootout. Dodging bullers while picking of your enemies one after the other is a great thrill. Dead Eye Targeting is the highlight of this game. Similiar to bullet-time in the Matrix, this feature never gets old. Slowing down time, it allows you to aim for multiple points on one or multiple enemies. When the Dead Eye Targeting ends, Marston will at these points in rapid succession. Taking on multiple enemies at once is way cool with this feature. The game allows you to choose whether you want to be a good guy or a bad guy. Roping, wounding and disarming enemies is the calling card of the good guy. Being bad, of course, mean massacring everyone in sight. The system is not perfect, and a few times I was penalized for doing something I thought was a good deed. Throughout the game your character is allowed to develop. Outlaws are treated differently by other folks than good guys. Not being able to test the multiplayer was experienced as a loss, though it was not the games fault. Although I enjoyed the game, it felt at times as if the balance between freedom and storyline was not perfectly implemented. Excellent graphics and wild open spaces are marred by the tedious travelling, but then again it is the Wild West. I will give it a solid 9 out of 10.
