A linguist, a doctor and an achiever

By: Mathhew Kionas

A lady physician has achieved a medical career through a roundabout route, a tribute to an unswerving purpose, though she did take time out for the odd party. But back when she was a high school student, single mindedness was not one of her traits. Then, as student at a local high school, she was attracted both to medicine and to linguistics as possible careers. She decided to hedge her bets and this forced her to take in all the languages ? French, Spanish and English and of course, all the sciences. Communication was her best sport but then she relied on her Spanish teacher's advice in making her choice. She was told that while she can do languages on the side, the medical world will insist that she never puts being a doctor on the second ground.

She was greeted by nothing but science subjects as her A-level studies when she went to the local community college. She was undeterred even after two years she found the results to be discouraging. The only subject she passed was her favorite one, Chemistry.

She got into the university by taking up Natural Sciences initially but she intends to pursue her first choice, medicine, as soon as she finishes the first year. While she did have a lot of good times, she did not perform well so transferring would be hard. She got more B's than A's. With her love for chemistry and this reason, she resolutely vowed to finish the degree.

Chemistry and food technology was what she chose to major in for she loves chemistry. Her honors degree arrived in the field. After she had graduated, she couldn't land a job. There was simply no work for her the first year she was out of university. Jobs weren't that easy to find. She was looking for one in the food industry. She felt bad and wondered why she pursued this in the first place.

The only being that was able to give her a good job was a drug dealer who was aware of her great expertise in handling industrial kettles so he was willing to give her a huge pay. She decided to turn it down for it did not tempt her one bit even if the money being offered to her was a huge sum for she was not brought up to think that money is god. She never lost sight of her dream to become a doctor as she continues to apply to medical school. As she awaited word from medical school, she fearfully accepted a teaching job.

A year later, she learned that if she'd ever get word of acceptance from med school she would need more money and this enabled her to leave her job as a teacher and joined a commercial bank to become a trainee manager. She goes back to the time when she weighed out the pros and cons then even went to talk to different people and they all figured that if she would just opt to stay with the bank, she will remain an employee. Medicine enabled her to have a business while she did her passion.

She was accepted to medical school two years later. The first year, in the usual tradition, was a mixture of fun and learning. She simply plunged into it. Not one of the bookworms but she studied as much as she needed and also allowed herself to party. She was among the top 10 percent in physiology and received a lot of awards in community health back in her first year. She got closer to a lot of people and that is why she loved community medicine. You enter into the homes that reveal the full picture of your patients' lives. For her, such a program was exceptional.

She avers that she can really get squeamish when cutting cadavers up but then she won't get affected in an emotional way. But when Pathology comes in, we see a different story. She'd cry for over ten weeks when new deaths came to them and required them to do autopsies. She became emotional with these people's deaths. She has great appreciation for pharmacology thanks to her background in chemistry. She was fascinated by how chemicals interact with others in the body and how they worked to cure diseases. Even when she didn't usually go to the library then, now she visits there for some journals. All she knew and knew her were shocked as she took home an award in Pharmacology.

No longer trying to become a bookworm, she and her five study partners have gained the status of total party organizers. Doing excellently in the final exams, three of them even got honors. A handful of honors including a medal in gynecology was reaped by one of the members in her group. After all, we can say that our time was never wasted.
