A few years ago, Vince Neil was atop of the world. He was the lead singer of one of the best Hard Rock bands of the 1980s, he managed to sell hundreds of thousands of albums, and packed arenas everywhere in the world. Unfortunately for Vince Neil, these glory days are over. Now Vince Neil isn't a household name any longer and neither is his artistic production. Neil’s newest solo release, Tattoos & Tequila, certainly does not represent these “glory days” of his lengthy and notorious career. In reality, this album really doesn’t have a lot of anything to offer to Rock n Roll in general. Of the 12 songs, just 2 are authentic new ones. The other tracks are cover songs of Traditional Rock and Metal artists. Concerning the 2 unique tracks, “Tattoos & Tequila” and “Another Bad Day”, neither could be very nicely written nor stands out. As an example Neil excitedly proclaims in “Tattoos & Tequila”; “I dream about your booty…I can’t wait until you do me again.” The tune itself was written by Marti Frederiksen, who is famous for co-writing several Aerosmith songs because the mid-1990s. He also co-wrote all of the songs from Mötley Crüe’s 2008 launch Saints Of Los Angeles. The opposite original song “Another Bad Day”, a barely higher offering, was co-written by Nikki Sixx. It really has somewhat of an old style Mötley Crüe sound. Neil’s vocals also sound recent and youthful which was a nice surprise. However, the music itself is neither recent nor youthful, and is ultimately not memorable. These cover songs that Neil performs are indeed an odd mixture of artists and music. Elvis Presley, Elton John, Credence Clearwater Revival, Intercourse Pistols, and The Scorpions just to call a few. Neil has been known to supply some great cover songs from his Mötley Crüe days, most notably “Smokin’ In The Boys Room” and “Helter Skelter”. Nonetheless, none of the tracks supplied right here measure as much as these Crüe classics. For lots of the songs he merely sounds out of his aspect and in the end like a foul evening at the karaoke bar. If there's one small glimmer of hope included inside this mess, it would be the quilt of The Hollies'. Neil’s particular style that he emulates actually works very well with this song. Tattoos & Tequila is perhaps an ideal album in case you are drinking a number of tequila, or if you're merely on the lookout for a good social gathering album. Nonetheless, Mötley Crüe fans should count on far more from their beloved Vince Neil other than a mediocre album of canopy songs.
