Secure Digital Memory Cards have been on the market since 2001 and the product has seen its unrivalled ascent in the electronics market because of its versatility and efficiency. But what makes it tick? How does a small chip hold so much power inside it? What made it such a breakthrough gadget that keeps it packaged with the latest digital cameras, cellular phones, and other personal digital assistants? Co-created by Matsushita, Toshiba, and SanDisk prior to 2000, the Secure Digital Memory card has, in its short history, established a global reputation for excellence in high-volume storage. During its conception, early versions were only able to hold 1MB of data, but over the course of the decade, the Secure Digital Memory Card now holds as much as 4GB of data, while its successor, the Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) 2.0 can retain as much as 32GB, more than 3000 times its original capacity when it was first released in the market. One of the main reasons that made the SD Memory Card so innovative was its ability to save data in a solid state, so to speak. That meant that even without a power source, one could be certain that the data has been backed up and retained even if it is not attached to the main device (i.e. digital camera) or to a reader (i.e. personal computer). Another valid reason that the SD Memory Card's living up to its its potential was the incessant need for copyright protection among media outlets. Because of the optional write-protection feature on most flash memory cards, data can be encrypted in such a way that pirates cannot duplicate it for their own personal monetary gain. This move was pushed for by the SD Music Initiative (SDMI), where there was a consensus to make popular media such as digital versions of music tracks easily available online without the threat of it being copied for mass distribution. The SD Memory Card's long battery life and relatively fast data transfer rate also makes it a popular choice. This is why it is affiliated with more devices than just the usual digital cameras and cellular phones. Thanks to its efficiency, certain car navigation systems and eBooks are also known to make use of this contraption too. Because of its sleek design, one underrated value of the SD Memory Card as compared to other storage devices is its ability to withstand significant amounts of trauma and other kinds of pressure. This includes drops from heights of 10 feet, whereas a disk drive would fall apart upon an impact of a mere two feet. Accessories have also been made in order to optimize the use of these flash memory cards. For example, SanDisk Secure Digital has released SD Plus, where a built in USB connector is present so that the memory card can be automatically connected to a computer when there is no card reader available.
