Thirty five years ago when I was growing up my grandfather brought a gumball machine home. My two brothers and I were told to see what grandad had bought. I remember how surprised we were when we first saw the mountain of gumballs practically calling our names from inside the machine. To this day I still believe that one or two of them may in fact have spoken to me. Grandpa gave each of us a nickel and told us to use it in the gumball machine. We were dizzy with amusement as we put the coin into the machine and twisted the handle. Our faces were ready to burst with excitement as we waited to see which color gumballs would be resting behind the small door. All of us smashed the gumballs into our mouth with little thought to what those colors actually were. Our grandpa looked on with a smile on his face. He then told us to sit down because he planned to tell us about the gumball machine. The Gumball Machine Policies Our grandpa set out some policies for the gumball machine. He told us we weren't allowed to play with it without either him, my grandmother or Mom or Dad. The change we used had to be money we earned from being well-mannered and doing our chores. He also told us we weren't permitted to have gum before dinner. The policies were pretty easy. We understood them and nothing was going to stop us from getting gumballs. How a Gumball Machine Made us Listen We knew the fastest way to be told we could not get gum out of the gumball machine was if we did not listen to our parents. Our parents knew that we all really wanted gumballs. They'd tell us whenever we did not listen the first time they said something that they'd tell Grandpa we misbehaved. This typically ended in a rapid turn in our actions. Dad gave us odd jobs that would earn us some change for the gumball machine. Looking back on it, our allowance was most likely less than minimum wage though the statute of limitations for a lawsuit may have passed. We were more focused on the amount of gumballs we acquired rather then how much money we were getting. The gumball machine was ultimately passed down to my father and continues to be in the family. Each time I glimpse, it I beam. A New Gumball Machine I have started searching on line for a gumball machine for my home. It is going to be both a way for me to recreate with my kids what our grandfather did for me and my siblings as well as being a reminder of something wonderful from my childhood. I see how my children's faces light up when they catch sight of a gumball machine and the wistful look they will give us. They basically will us to have change in our pocket that we will give them so they can get a gumball. We like the big gumballs in my family. The kiddies all want the red and blue gumballs when they get them from a machine. I want to fill the gumball machine with just red and blue gumballs. I might put in some white gumballs for 4th of July, after all we want to be patriotic! A gumball machine is a big part of my adolescence and I want to let my family get pleasure from the same lessons I learned due to a pretty wise grandad and a gumball machine.
