Many American's may heard about Tibet, the city said to be the place nearest to heaven. But after a travelling in Xitang, I believed that this is the exact the next door to heaven. Xitang is a river town of Zhejiang province in China with a history of 1000 years, which is known for its stockpile of buildings from Ming and Qing dynasties. When first standing in the narrow stock street between the old houses, I thought about the compliments of tourists from all over the world: "The whole town looks like a beautiful poem or an elegant picture," "I forgot about all the hustle and bustle here in Xitang." The houses built along Xitang's river are well-preserved. Soaked in the rich moisture of the Yangtze River, the buildings are covered with lichen-the older the building, the darker the lichen. White walls rendered black, black roofs and white marble bridges compose what appears to be a Chinese ink painting in which visitors and residents may enter. Water is the soul and spirit of Xitang city, there are many aged bridges come across the river; Songzilaifeng is the most distinctive among the three bridges along the covered corridor. High-back benches dot one side of the bridge along the river, where passersby can rest, many visitors like to sit in the pavilion near the bridge to take in the sight. In ancient times, Xitang is a crowded business center of Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Jiangsu. The buildings on the two sides packed in and left little space for passengers, the street between buildings are all very narrow even can not pass tracks. This is also the reason for the real roads in Xitang are invisible today and only lanes of different sizes are apparent. The old town in Xitang is not a tourist place any more , but it is still the living space, many old residents live here for a long time ago, grandmothers sit quietly outside their houses, watching different people walking by, or watching operas after meals. Women wash their clothes along the river in front of their doors, dogs sleeping under roofs. There are quite a lot that visitors can do. Sit along the river with a cup of tea, watching operas if you are interested in, or just boating on the river to travel around this city.
