28 Million Americans Affected by Hearing Impairment

By: JaniceP Estey

This lady executive was expectant of mumbling especially since a medical condition left her deaf in her left ear. Only when she found she could barely make out what others were saying did she think of asking for help. This woman, 58, who manages a city's popular Park, with its ball fields, golf courses, ice rinks and an outdoor theater, was among the first to enroll in the word of mouth lip reading program by the Central Institute for the Deaf. Older executives may enroll in this program if they are still active in the workplace and are already coping with hearing loss at their ages.

An audiolist claims that when you get older, your ability to translate sound is lost, resulting in you not being able to understand others. For the lady executive, whose hearing in her right ear was unaffected, the program was a form of preventive maintenance. Communicating through speaking is crucial to the careers of a lot of people. Around four students at most are accommodated in the one hour class that meets once a week for four weeks.

A participant's skills in lip reading are further enhanced through the aid of videos which are watched for half the class time. When the expressionless woman mouths sentences, the participants make an effort to discover what sentences are being said. Imitating the way her mouth shapes the words is what some often do. When students cannot make out what is being said they can ask for a clue or they can have the sentence said in another way. Both are important lip reading tricks.

Otherwise known as presbycusis, age related hearing loss happens when the inner loses its ability to transmit sounds. The first sounds that people lose hearing of are the high pitched sounds. They would then increase the volume of the TV, insisting that the people are just mumbling. She states that the condition presbycusis cannot be remedied much with the use of a hearing aid.

In setting where noise in the background is normal, it becomes a dilemma for most. They start becoming depressed loners since they feel that they can't compete against those younger than them.

Noise continues to dominate much of society. Our exposure to noise is making younger generations suffer from hearing loss. The country's top disability, hearing impairment now affects almost 30 million Americans. One in every four adults aged 66 and over suffers from permanent hearing loss.

A better life and a happier one is what the institute hopes to give its word of mouth program enrollees. The feeling of being young again and being more perceptive is a benefit people gain from focused communication training. Lip reading exercises among loved ones and coworkers is greatly encouraged. There are those who keep the TV muted while they watch.

The great lip reader does not emerge simply after four weeks of training. They will realize that lip reading is actually difficult and that they have to combine it with other methods still. Because of this, the students learn to improve their hearing also during the second half of the class.

An executive is advised to make a front row seat reservation if he is going to attend a seminar. The real reason for why it's reserved will not be known. It is hoped that more people from across the country could be accommodated and a weekend session would be made available.
