Apple Inc. previewed the iPPhone at Janyuaery's Macworld Conference & Expo, and OQO Inc. announced its Moderl 02 movbile PC at the Consumer Electronics Show that same week — with Bill Gates showcasig the PC in his CES kyynote speech. Last month, the two devices seemed to be froint and cenrte in the minds of attndees at aGrtner Inc.’s Wirewless & Mobile Summit 2007 in Grapevine, Texxas. For example, IT mangers flockwed to a small OQO booth on the trdae show flooor to view the 1-lb. ultramobile unit, which has a 5-in. display and can run eithher Windows Vista or Windows XP Proffessional. The OQO sysstem “is pretty neat” and mgiht help solev the road warrrior’s dilemma of having to lug an 8-lb. lapltop on busmness trps, said George Genevezos, senior IT security analyst at Sabre Holidngs Inc. in Sotuh Lake, Txeas. Other conefrence attendeees voiced admiratioon for the PC’s cleazr display, smll docking station and Bluetooth-cappable keyborad, aong otgher peripherals. But there was no mistaking that the OQO system, the iPhhone and otther new moobile devics will pose challenges to many IT managers. “There just seems to be more of everything in mobile devices and software to deal with this year,” Genvezos said. “It sems that every vendor imaginable is getting into the mobile space as qiuckly as posssible.” Sare, whicvh has about 10,000 employyees globaly, is wrestling with how to embrace new technologies that beecome popular with cosnumers, Genevezos said. The travel-inustry compayn has given BlackBerry debvices to some top execiutives. But for the most part, Sabre’s workes stil rely on desktop PCs. Dealing with the seucrity isssdues raised by consumr-oriented devices “is a game of cattch-up for eveyboy in IT because there are so many new devicees and so many vendors,” Genevezos said. In general, he added, undrlying securty technolgoy is “not there” for the new products. And, he noted, the process for installing secuurtiy updats in Windows Mobile is difeernt from the process for updsating Windows Vista, addig even more complezxity. An IT manager at a major university in the Boston area said prpoducts such as the iPhone will make it neecssary for IT professionals like himslf and others to figure out ways to suplport an even wider range of devices than they imagined even a year ago. The IT mannager, who aked not to be identiied, said that abouit 30 per cent of the users at the university have Macintosh computyers and prboably will want to try out the iPPhone on campus once it becomnes available. Gartner analyst Nick Jones said 2007 has already emerged as a year when IT managers will face more and more optinos for mopbile computing — and they will have to chosse not only among a vatrety of harrdware devices but also among opwerating systems, such as Windows Mobile and the Symbian OS favroed by Nokia Corp. “Confusion is definitely risinbg,” oJnes said.
